2017 Reserve Chardonnay $40
2017 Reserve Chardonnay $40
2017 was a great vintage in Mudgee producing excellent fruit across all varieties. Lovely winter rain fall produced excellent canopy and fruit ratio, ensure adequate ripeness in all varieties. Summer was warm, and fairly dry, producing fruit in excellent condition.
Picked by hand, whole bunch pressed straight in to barrel – 50% new, 50% older French oak hogsheads – and allowed to wild ferment. Added complexity was gained through partial malolactic fermentation. A modern style of Chardonnay with citrus and stone fruit notes, leading to a complex and creamy palate, with nice acidity and length to finish. Will age well over the next 5 – 8 years.
AWARDS & REVIEWS
94 POINTS “Brioche and raw cashews lead to lemon juice and lemon butter. Some cedar, fine spices and sweet vanilla sit atop a textured and long delivery. Acid is pitched beautifully with a grapefruit tang for days. Delicious. Drink now to eight years.” QWine
94 POINTS “A lovely youthful pale straw. Fresh and vibrant are my first impressions. The aromas, are classic – think lush citrus, fresh fig, tropical fruits such as melon and passionfruit. Lightly spiced. A smooth well integrated Chardonnay follows. The fruit is seamless, almost velvety luscious smooth and long. Delightful drinking, effortless down the throat. Bring me more it says. The melon dominates nicely on the finish. You might think all this fruit detracts a little from a structural perspective but this is an elegant classy Chardonnay overall. It is really well put together, again I use the word seamless in my notes and that reflects the synchronicity of the fruit and the long lovely mouthfeel and finish.” paulippolito.com
92 POINTS “Bright, medium-yellow colour, with a smoky sulfide overtone, a smoked-chicken bouquet, while the palate is tight and light to middle weight, with a good crisp, lively tang, thanks to its acidity. A very attractive and quite complex medium-bodied chardonnay.” Huon Hooke.
92 POINTS “A highly-worked chardonnay with abundant flavour and gunflint sulfides, plus a delicious core of lemony fruit. I love the tight coil of acid driving the palate. Decant an hour before serving to open the fruit and harmonise the elements.” Toni Paterson MW
“While this Mudgee brand’s hero variety might be riesling, this award-winning Chardonnay will give that deserved ranking a nudge or two. It features generous fruit-driven flavours benefiting from seasoned vines winemaker Jacob Stein’s grandfather Robert Stein planted more than 40 years ago. Top of the class effort.” Sunday Telegraph, John Fordham May 2019
“…complex stone fruit and citrus flavours and aromas.” Brisbane Courier Mail, Des Houghton, May 2019
“… a truly outstanding dry white laden with rich, powerful fruit flavours and layers of winemakers nuance.” Western Weekender, John Rozentals, Apr 2019

“Goodness me. The aromas are divine. Typically stonefruit with a hint of oak and buttered toast but this descriptor does not do it justice. ‘Typically’ seems so wrong here. It’s better than that. Palate pleasure is palpable thanks to rich and generous flavours. Peaches are present, there’s a lemon/citrusy influence and a smooth creamy textural finish that is persistent and more-ish with the addition of nicely balanced acidity. Actually, the whole wine is beautifully balanced…Simply a gorgeous Mudgee Chardonnay. I wonder how many more trophies it’s going to add to the three it’s already picked up.” Words from a Wineglass, May 2019
“It opens with a whoosh of French oak and subdued nose. This soon morphs into a well-balanced delivery of primary varietal fruit well-anchored in the apricot / ripe melon range with a waft of citrus zest and nuttiness. The partial Malo Lactic treatment and wild yeast open-vat ferment add freshness, complexity and interest throughout its palate journey This is another well-crafted and smoothly integrated Chardonnay reflecting both its regionality and deft massaging by Jacob Stein. It is delivering smooth enjoyment now but will certainly benefit from a few years of cellaring.” The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour, May 2019
