2017 Reserve Chardonnay $40

2017 Reserve Chardonnay $40

TROPHY, 2018 Mudgee Wine Show

FINALIST, Winestate Wine of the Year Awards

2017 was a great vintage in Mudgee producing excellent fruit across all varieties. Lovely winter rain fall produced excellent canopy and fruit ratio, ensure adequate ripeness in all varieties. Summer was warm, and fairly dry, producing fruit in excellent condition.

Picked by hand, whole bunch pressed straight in to barrel – 50% new, 50% older French oak hogsheads – and allowed to wild ferment. Added complexity was gained through partial malolactic fermentation. A modern style of Chardonnay with citrus and stone fruit notes, leading to a complex and creamy palate, with nice acidity and length to finish. Will age well over the next 5 – 8 years.

9.4/10  Daily Examiner, Max Crus

94 POINTS  “Brioche and raw cashews lead to lemon juice and lemon butter. Some cedar, fine spices and sweet vanilla sit atop a textured and long delivery. Acid is pitched beautifully with a grapefruit tang for days. Delicious. Drink now to eight years.” QWine

94 POINTS  “… this is an elegant classy Chardonnay overall. It is really well put together, again I use the word seamless in my notes and that reflects the synchronicity of the fruit and the long lovely mouthfeel and finish.” paulippolito.com

“…Hints of spice and toast complete a complex picture.” ★★★★  Winewise Magazine, Aug 2019

92 POINTS  “… Good generous style, if anything but delicate.” Oz Wine Review, Andrew Graham, Sep 2019

92 POINTS “Bright, medium-yellow colour, with a smoky sulfide overtone, a smoked-chicken bouquet, while the palate is tight and light to middle weight, with a good crisp, lively tang, thanks to its acidity. A very attractive and quite complex medium-bodied chardonnay.” Huon Hooke.

92 POINTS “A highly-worked chardonnay with abundant flavour and gunflint sulfides, plus a delicious core of lemony fruit. I love the tight coil of acid driving the palate. Decant an hour before serving to open the fruit and harmonise the elements.” Toni Paterson MW

“Second among chardonnays to the Winestate champ, this fine Robert Stein 2017 Mudgee Reserve Chardonnay is brassy gold, cumquat-scented and has elegant nectarine front palate flavour. Lemon curd, melon, mineral and cashew oak show on the middle palate and slatey acid at the finish.” Newcastle Herald, John Lewis, Dec 2019

“While this Mudgee brand’s hero variety might be riesling, this award-winning Chardonnay will give that deserved ranking a nudge or two… Top of the class effort.” Sunday Telegraph, John Fordham May 2019

“…complex stone fruit and citrus flavours and aromas.” Brisbane Courier Mail, Des Houghton, May 2019

“… a truly outstanding dry white laden with rich, powerful fruit flavours and layers of winemakers nuance.” Western Weekender, John Rozentals, Apr 2019

“Goodness me. The aromas are divine…Simply a gorgeous Mudgee Chardonnay. I wonder how many more trophies it’s going to add to the three it’s already picked up.” Words from a Wineglass, May 2019

“…This is another well-crafted and smoothly integrated Chardonnay reflecting both its regionality and deft massaging by Jacob Stein. It is delivering smooth enjoyment now but will certainly benefit from a few years of cellaring.” The Grape Hunter, Gilbert Labour, May 2019

“Light Straw in colour with green hue. Lovely lifted aromas of fresh stonefruit, ginger and red apple. The palate is rich with peaches and cream, hazelnut and a buttery texture with lovely natural acidity providing nice length of flavour.” Winestate Magazine, Wine of the Year Finalist, Jan 2020
